Understanding the Function of ESR Tests

HemaTechnologies are medical laboratory equipment manufacturers. Their current focus is on erythrocyte sedimentation rate testing with their ESR Stat Plus and ESR STAT 6 analyzers. HemaTechnologies developed the ESR Stat analyzers to enhance erythrocyte testing and utilize small blood sample collection to achieve quick, safe, and accurate results.

ESR tests, or Erythrocyte Sedimentation Rate, determine the rate at which samples of red blood cells, also called erythrocytes, settle at the bottom in a process called sedimentation. Doctors utilize the test to identify inflammations and make a diagnosis. Machines measure ESR rates in millimeters per hour (mm/hr).

Normal ESR levels range between one and 13 mm/hr for males and one and 20 mm/hr for females. However, this range depends on the age or medical condition of the patient. For example, people may have an artificially low ESR levels if they are suffering from sickle cell anemia, leukemia, or congestive heart failure. Moderately high levels could indicate rheumatoid arthritis, thyroid, or kidney diseases, while high ESR levels, over 100 mm/hr, could result from age or blood cancer.

It is important to note that normal ESR levels may not always indicate the absence of disease as these tests are non-specific and can only recognize the presence or absence of inflammations. This non-specificity is why doctors do not analyze its results in isolation but alongside other laboratory tests to determine a correct diagnosis for the patient.
